How to make a 100% recylced Polaroid frame!
Alright - Photojojo mentioned this in their 10 Ways to Love Polaroid newsletter but didn’t give any specific instruction, so in the spirit of Polaroid Awesomeness, DIY and being green I have put together a little tutorial for you on how to make these sweet Polaroid frames. It’s fairly simple, looks great and gives your pictures that extra kick of DIY hipness.
Observe.
Full instructions after the jump!
-
Grab an empty Polaroid cassette
Finish your current pack or dig through your garbage and grab one of those snazzy film cassettes from your 600 series film.
-
Snap off the little door flap
At the bottom of the cassette there will be a thin little piece of plastic that acts as a door for the film pack. Snap that off, but be careful! You need it in one piece! Put this to the side for now.
-
Slide it in!
The picture of course… Lightly push down/hold the metal brace and slide the Polaroid in where you just snapped the door off. The trickiest part will be getting the top to sit correctly, it needs to get in between the metal and the plastic frame. TIP: Push up on the Polaroid from the bottom then slide your finger across the top of the picture so that it gets tucked under the top rim and sits all the way inside the “frame”.
Once it’s in, square it up so there is even amounts of white showing- It should sit like this. -
Peel it!
Carefully remove the sticker from the back and put it aside, but don’t trash it!
-
Wedge it!
Grab the door you snapped off earlier. Now wedge it in one of the circular holes on the back of the film pack, get it in there so it feels secure and bends out a bit.
-
Secure it!
Now using the sticker you set aside, tape off the door flap you wedged in the back. This will secure it and keep it from sliding around in the hole.
-
Stand it up!
That’s it! You did it! Now just stand it up. You might have to jiggle around the door piece until you find a place it sits and keeps the picture frame up. Otherwise, congrats you now have a 100% recycled, DIY, totally indie Polaroid frame.
TIP: If you are having trouble getting your frame to stand up, give the plastic door a little bend, it should be pretty flexible and will separate from the cassette a bit more so it stands better.
Advance Technique: Repeat step #3 with another picture (on top of the picture already in there). Now you can load it up and slide the top one out whenever you get bored of it, revealing a sparkling new picture. (Or you hide a photo of your secret love behind an innocent picture of say…your dog… or something).
Bonus: Alternatively you can use the holes in the back to hang them on the wall.
